Author Karen Vaughan is in the Spotlight!

MEET AUTHOR
KAREN VAUGHAN

When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?
Right after I finished writing Dead on arrival 10 years ago but before that I just wrote to amuse myself.

How long does it take you to write a book? Anywhere between 6 months to a year from first draft to editing. Although I did manage to write a first draft in 6 weeks FOR LEFT FOR DEAD and I completed a book for NaNoWri in 30 days. Does that count?

What is your work schedule like when you're writing?
I am not sure I really have a schedule per se but I try to write every evening when I am in the groove.

What would you say is your interesting writing quirk? I am a pantser—I never plot beyond figuring out who the characters are and the general plots and sub plots. I just write and the characters butt their heads in and tell me what to do.  I also write long hand in a notebook and then dictate.

How do your books get published? I self-publish. My last 3 books are on KDP and the first 4 were with 2 different Print on demand publishers.

Where do you get your information or ideas for your books? Ideas come to me in the middle of the night or people feed me ideas. Characters will infiltrate my head. Like yo over here write this. I’m like that’s a great story!

When did you write your first book and how old were you? Ha I started writing DEAD ON ARRIVAL 11 years ago. I was 41 at the time.

What do you like to do when you're not writing? Colour, sketch, play computer games and sleep.

What does your family think of your writing? My brother and one of my sisters supports it. Hubby’s family thinks it’s great. Hubs brags about it all the time. My daughter thinks it’s a neat hobby but was embarrassed by the love scenes on one of them. At 18, she felt weird reading that coming out of me.

What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating your books?  I am a very sarcastic person and it comes out I my lead character Laura. I love writing dialogue. I have a quirky warped sense of humor.  I also write stand up comedy routines for myself.

How many books have you written? Which is your favorite? Seven so far. My standalone DEAD COMIC STANDING is my favorite as it combines my love for writing books and comedy.

Do you have any suggestions to help me become a better writer? If so, what are they?
If you get an idea go with it. Trust your gut! Never give up! Do not edit as you write just go with the flow. Listen to your characters. They know what they want!

Do you hear from your readers much? What kinds of things do they say?
They suggest stories for the series mostly. Ramp up the sex! They love the humor and “Laura's propensity to land in trouble like a porterhouse steak in a pack of Dobermans.”

Do you like to create books for adults? Yes but I would love to challenge myself by writing a YA novel.

What do you think makes a good story? A story-line people can relate to, like love or a tragedy. A balance of humor, romance and suspense, family drama.

As a child, what did you want to do when you grew up?
I wanted to be language teacher at first and then a travel agent.

Any books in the works?
I have 2 done and need to be formatted. They are standalones for now but one of them would work in a series. I am also working on book #7 in the series for Laura and Gerry.

What are your plans for the future?  I will keep writing until I can’t see to type or dictate or completely lose my marbles.

EXCERPT FROM LEFT FOR DEAD:

Gerry arrived at Peters place, albeit later that he had said. He was accustomed to just walking in, as Pete never locked up. Gerry, Laura and his ex-girlfriend Elaine had ragged on him for his lack of security in regards to personal safety.
"Pete your place is a home invasion waiting for a place to happen." He ignored them, stating he had nothing worth stealing. Eventually, the group gave up, telling him to be more careful.

He had been off work from his job and the lumber yard. Funds were drying up and he was on the verge of having to work at Home Depot or similar places. After their ball hockey game, he and Gerry were going there with resumes in hand.

"Hey Pete, it's me. Let's go man. We have asses to kick." Getting no answer, he shoved the side door open on the way into Pete's place. Something was off, Gerry had a knot in his stomach. He got every time he knew something was very wrong. His worst fears were confirmed when he saw the devastation in the room. His cousin lay prone on the floor with his face beaten to a pulp. The knot in his gut went straight to his throat. Gerry wanted to wail, but he had to check his cousin out first. There was a pulse but it was thready. "My God, who did this to you, and why?” What crap had his cousin gotten himself into, to get him beaten up this badly?
Gerry got himself together enough to call 911. While he sat around and waited. He called Laura and told her what happened.
"Cookie! Something happened to Pete. You've got to come home and bring Elaine."
Laura asked what was wrong.
"I came in and found him beaten up. I hear the ambulance now, gotta go. I'll call you back when I know more.”
